Writing

At Wood End Park Academy, we believe that great writing begins with great communication. Our approach places a strong emphasis on oracy, discussion and oral rehearsal, enabling pupils to develop and refine their ideas before committing them to paper. We take the time to secure the foundations of writing, ensuring pupils develop strong phonics knowledge, accurate sentence construction and confidence in expressing their thoughts clearly.

As pupils become secure in these essential skills, they are gradually introduced to increasingly sophisticated vocabulary, grammar and writing structures. This carefully sequenced approach allows pupils to write with growing independence and creativity without becoming overwhelmed.

Our curriculum is supported by sensible, evidence-informed scaffolds that help pupils succeed at every stage of their development. Strategies such as Colourful Semantics support pupils in understanding sentence structure, organising their ideas and extending their writing. Through explicit teaching, regular practice and high expectations, we equip every pupil to become a confident, capable and successful writer.
