Special Educational Needs

Leigh Primary School - Special Educational Needs

At Wood End Park Academy, we believe that every child can succeed and deserves the opportunity to thrive. Our inclusive approach is centred on supporting all pupils to make excellent progress from their individual starting points, regardless of their needs, abilities or backgrounds. We work closely with children, families and external professionals to identify barriers to learning and provide the right support at the right time.

Where additional needs are identified, we help families navigate the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process, offering guidance, advice and practical support throughout. We value strong partnerships with parents and carers and recognise the vital role they play in their child’s education.

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, ambitious and responsive to individual needs. We focus on the highest leverage strategies for each child, ensuring teaching and support are tailored so that every pupil can access learning, develop confidence, and achieve their full potential.

Our SEND unit

Tajiri Class | Wiltshire Class | Thunberg Class

Wood End Park Academy’s SEND Unit is a specialist provision for up to 24 pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), providing highly personalised support across a range of developmental and academic needs. Our provision includes pre-formal, semi-formal and formal learning environments, enabling pupils to access a curriculum that is carefully matched to their strengths, needs and next steps. Some pupils follow the Engagement Model within nurturing pre-formal classrooms, while others work towards National Curriculum expectations through more structured semi-formal and formal pathways.

We work closely with families and a range of external professionals to ensure every pupil receives tailored support. This includes bespoke Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy programmes, integrated into daily learning where appropriate. Our curriculum is adapted to meet pupils’ individual sensory, communication and developmental needs, whilst also building upon their interests and motivations. Through this personalised approach, we help pupils develop independence, confidence, communication skills and the foundations for lifelong success.
